How I make $100k a year as a Travel Filmmaker
…and how you can too — without a huge following or agency background.
Step 1: Know Who You’re Creating For
Forget trying to “work with anyone.” You need to define your ideal travel client.
Are they:
🏨 A boutique hotel or eco-lodge?
🗺️ A tourism board or DMO?
🧳 A travel gear or experience brand?
Figure out:
What kind of video content they need (social reels, hero videos, hotel walkthroughs)?
How often they need content (seasonally, monthly, per campaign)?
What budget they might realistically work with?
✍️ Action: Build a list of 20 dream travel clients — hotels, destinations, brands — that actually need content.
Step 2: Build a Brand That Feels Pro
Hotels and travel brands don’t want to hire a “guy with a camera.”
They want someone who feels like a media partner.
You don’t need to go crazy — just be intentional:
🎨 Use a clean name, simple logo, and consistent colors
🎞️ Build a portfolio that screams “I’ve done this before” (even if it’s spec work)
🎥 Action:
Create 2–3 travel-style videos that reflect the clients you want to work with
Design a 1-page PDF or simple site that feels like a travel film agency, not a freelancer page
Step 3: Offer Packages That Make It Easy to Say Yes
Clients don’t want to “build a custom quote.” They want clear offers.
Here’s an example that worked for me:
Hotel Content Starter Pack – $3,500
1 hero film (90 sec)
5 social edits
20 pro photos
1-day on-site shoot
Full commercial license
Want monthly retainers? Build tiered packages.
📦 Action: Create 1 flagship offer (for hotels or brands) + 1 premium upsell for longer stays or full campaigns.
Step 4: Reach Out Like a Human, Not a Robot
DMs like “hey bro, let’s collab” don’t cut it here.
Start with warm leads:
Past contacts, local hotels, coworking spaces, retreat centers you’ve visited
For cold leads:
Use LinkedIn or Google Maps to find hotels or travel brands
Find the marketing manager, brand lead, or owner
Send a short, personalized message showing what you can do for them
📣 Action: Reach out to 5 travel businesses per day. Keep it personal and short — like you’re pitching a real opportunity.
Step 5: Sell Without Being Sleazy
When you get on a discovery call, keep it simple:
Ask about their brand, audience, and goals
Ask: “What kind of content have you tried before?”
Show examples of your work that match their vibe
Suggest a package that fits, and give a ballpark range
Always follow up with a short, clean proposal
🤝 Action: Use a simple pitch deck or PDF — nothing flashy, just clear and confident.
Step 6: Deliver. Overdeliver. Then Scale.
Shoot on time. Be creative. Deliver fast. Communicate well.
This makes clients want to rebook you.
Then, when you’re getting traction:
👥 Hire an editor
🗓️ Batch your shoots
📈 Use testimonials and case studies to book even better clients
🔥 Action: Treat every shoot like it’s your demo reel for the next big gig.
